Welcome to my Garden

Welcome to the first entry in my gardening blog.

A little about the name.

I'm a lover of mythology and I adore goddesses so I chose the obvious one to look over my shoulder and help me take care of my garden. Here is a little about her:

In Roman mythology, Flora was a goddess of flowers and the season of spring. While she was otherwise a relatively minor figure in Roman mythology, being one among several fertility goddesses, her association with the spring gave her particular importance at the coming of springtime. Her festival, the Floralia, was held in April or early May and symbolized the renewal of the cycle of life, drinking, and flowers. Her Greek equivalent was Chloris. Flora was married to Favonius, the wind god, and her companion was Hercules. Her name is derived from the Latin word "flos" which means "flower." In modern English, "Flora" also means the plants of a particular region or period. [1]

Flora achieved more prominence in the neo-pagan revival of Antiquity among Renaissance humanists than she had ever enjoyed in ancient Rome.

One of the fairies in the Sleeping Beauty is named Flora after this goddess.

My newest novel is about fairies so I might just have to work Miss Flora into that story line. Maybe she will feel honored and bestow her gratitude upon my own garden!

About Me and My Garden
I have been keeping a journal about Gardening since I moved back to New York sometime around 2004. I have always loved to garden but all the notes seem to get jumbled up and never in the same notebook as I have the tendency to pick up whatever notebook is close at hand and just start scribbling in it.

Those scribbles are important information to have from year to year so I decided to see if having a specific journal about my gardening efforts would be helpful. I do like to blog so maybe it's the answer to the hodgepodge I have now. I have used my regular blog "Life is good" a few times and maybe I will see if I can move some of those posts over to this one.

Bees
I'm hot to bee a beekeeper! Sorry about that.. I just couldn't resist. As I get further along in this endeavor I'm going to use my gardening blog to talk about them too. If they start taking up too much space, I can always give them their own blog.

I'm researching beekeeping which is why you will see that I'm linking to some beekeeper sights. Since I'm in New York, I figure I will have to find some people that are beekeeping in this region of the country and know how to "Winter" bee's here. Look at me already speaking the jargon. I wonder if I move to Texas after a couple of years here, if my bees can go with me? I'll have to look into that too. I'll also have to find out if any of my little grandsons are allergic to bees.

Charles is resistant to my beekeeping interest but I feel sure he will come around. After all he's broken my heart by putting his foot down about my having a goat. It seems like a few bee's are a small consolation for that.

The blog timeline

As for the organizational time-line for this blog, in order to have a history, I think I will post some pictures from my 07 and 08 garden which will bring me up to the 2010 garden. The 2009 garden was pretty much a bust. I still really don't know why. Maybe the ground was tired and I tried to avoid that this year by rotating my crops. That makes me snicker and feel so much like a farmer.

So, here goes nothing...... well something.. he he
